All about Lessons

I am currently accepting students! I would love to meet with you to discuss lesson options and find what is right for you or your student. For students ages 5-8 Kinderflute classes can be a great place to start, initially beginning with group classes tailored to young musicians unique needs and abilities.

For students ages 8-adult, lessons are offered weekly in half hour, forty-five minute, or full hour sessions. Studio recitals are typically held in the Fall & Spring.  Students are strongly encouraged to participate yearly in local flute society events and all school band opportunities including Solo and Ensemble and All State.

I teach from my home in Midland, Michigan and also to students across the country online.

30 Minute Lessons

Ideal for beginning and early intermediate students.
Lessons include work from an exercise book, technique and tone development, and solo work. Parents are required to attend lessons with students under the age of 10.

45 Minute Lessons

Ideal for intermediate and advancing students.
Lessons include everything from 30 minute lessons, with an added focus on skills like sight reading, increased musical development, and a larger focus on expanding repertoire.
Students taking 45 minute or longer lessons are held to a high standard of weekly preparation. Failure to come prepared will result in being invited to reduce lesson times back to 30 minutes.

60 Minute Lessons

Ideal for advanced students, and those preparing for auditions and college applications.

Miss Nicole is a rare gem. Not only is she a highly skilled flutist, performing professionally on a regular basis, but she has the gift of teaching the flute by breaking each skill into tiny digestible steps. She’s not too nice, not too strict. She is great at reading student body language and modifies lessons to suite individual needs. Miss Nicole is full of wisdom and insight not only on how to play the flute well, but also anticipates needs and spends time brainstorming with the parent to figure out what is best for sustained student growth.
When my daughter wanted to study the flute, Miss Nicole was referred to me by a music teacher friend. I had no idea we had hit the flute teacher jackpot. The foundation and proper techniques Nicole taught set my daughter up for continued growth and success. As a parent and a musician, I have worked with many music teachers over the decades. Nicole Elkins stands head and shoulders literally and figuratively above the rest. Flute playing and teaching aside, she is a lovely human who cares genuinely about each of her students.

First Lesson Expectations

I've Never Played Flute Before

I'll provide an instrument for your first lesson. We'll try working to get sound out of the flute (it's the trickiest first step!) and then we'll discuss goals and what you are hoping for from lessons.
I'll help you look at options for renting/purchasing a flute and we'll get scheduled for future lessons.

I've Played Flute Before

Bring the music you've most recently worked on. It can be your band music, or just things you have been playing on your own. If you are coming from a previous teacher and have books you have been working out of please bring them! My goal is to asses where you are at in your playing and then we can work to make a plan for the future.
I'll have you play a little for me, and also have you try doing some new things to see how we work together. Feel free to ask me questions or bring up concerns as we are getting started.
At the end if we both feel like this is a good fit we'll work to get you a regular spot in my studio and I'll look forward to seeing you next week.
